Eliminate
the 5/16" Washer!
The new 1-1/8" Thick Washer Face SMARTHEX™
was designed by Lohr Fasteners to eliminate the need for a
separate 5/16" hardened washer to be installed under
the head when A490 bolts with a diameter of 1" or larger
are used in connections with oversize or short
slotted holes in an outer ply. The new bolt has our basic
SMARTHEX™ head design with a thickened washer formed
as part of the bolt head. Elimination of the 5/16
washer also provides an additional usable 5/16" grip
on each bolt.
Testing
Karl H. Frank, Ph.D., P.E. studied and tested the ability
of the integral washer to replace a separate 5/16" washer
under the bolt head. The purpose of the testing was to show
that our new thick washer face design can eliminate the use
of the 5/16" washer under the head currently required
by the AISC specification for bolts over 1" in diameter
on short slotted and oversized holes by reducing the hole
deformation currently experienced with the 5/16" washers.
Test
Conclusions
The SMARTHEX™ Bolts with integral thick washer formed
with the head performed better than a standard bolt
with a separate 5/16" washer required when oversized
holes or short slotted holes are used with A490 bolts greater
than 1" in diameter. The plastic deformation of the plate
material under the washer head of the SMARTHEX™ Bolt
was less than 0.0005 in. in the A36 test plate. The SMARTHEX™
Bolt with the large integral washer head prevents excessive
deformation under the bolt head and does not require a separate
